Why Closed Communion?
Friday, May 29th, 2009We want everyone to commune with us and so does God, but God’s will takes time!
It may be God’s will for you to be married, but today may not be God’s time. It may be God’s will for you to be promoted at work, but today may not be that day.
Closed communion is the biblical and historic practice of serving Holy Communion to those who are prepared to receive it—those who have been instructed in the Apostolic (Lutheran) faith (Acts 2:42), who are willing to examine themselves in light of God’s Word (1 Cor. 11:28), and who share our faith and practice (1 Cor. 10:17).
Instruction takes time. Self-examination takes effort. Expressing agreement with our faith requires an opportunity to meet with the Pastor and to be examined regarding the content of that faith.
These steps are pleasing to God, who wants us to be in agreement regarding the basics of the faith (1 Cor. 1:10).
We care deeply about your spiritual well-being, and we desire more for you than a casual acquaintance with us. We want you to share in the deepest mysteries of the faith, but that requires time and a willingness to receive the Lord’s instruction.
